Source Of Deep Shadows: Fading emptiness

25/05/11  ||  Khlysty

Aw, c’mon guys. You know that I love doom, the doomiest, the bestest. But, hey, can’t you do something more than that? I mean, yeah, I know, you play funereal death/doom and all that. And, you’re from Poland, which means that you fucking have the know-how of playing metal. And, yeah, yeah, you add some death metal here and there, which is always a smart thing to do, perking up the interest a’ them deathers who hate slow music. I know all this stuff. But, still…

First of all, I don’t really dig the name. Okay, my bad taste is renowned in these parts, but, say what you will, I don’t like it and that’s that. Then, what the hell’s wrong with the drums? Most probably you guys use a drum machine, which is A-OK with me… as long as this machine HITS HARD! And here it doesn’t do nothin’ like that, sounding more like a badly-recorded household appliance. Actually, the whole record has a limp feel, as if you didn’t wanna disturb the neighbors when you were laying the tracks down. No matter how desperate and dispirited you wanna sound, the songs must have bite; and yours, sound-wise, totally lacks such a thing.

Okay, there are some goody elements to be found here and there. This little ditty of yours, “Endless Cold”, is pretty effective in creating the desired funereal mood (although the clicky bass in the background is a distraction). And the two-parted “Crystal Cage” shows ambition and potential. Not bad, if you want my opinion, even though a bit of trimming might have made the whole nine-minutes, suite-like composition more to-the-point. Actually, guys, I like you more when you stay at the slower end of things: your music has some interesting melodic elements that don’t really fit well with death metallisms, at least to these ears.

Anyway, I think that you guys have potential. I suppose that if you shed the deathisms altogether, or use them more sparingly things will be better. Make it your goal to write effective, sad and desperate funereal doom and I think that everything’s gonna be much, much better…
